Shortly before a press conference on November 9, Günter Schabowski, a spokesperson for the politburo, was handed a note that said that East Berliners would be allowed to cross the border with proper permission but given no further instructions on how to handle the information. These regulations had only been completed a few hours earlier and were to take effect the following day, so as to allow time to inform the border guards—however, nobody had informed Schabowski. He read the note out loud at the end of the conference. When the Italian journalist Riccardo Ehrman, the Berlin correspondant of ANSA newsagency, asked when the regulations would come into effect, Schabowski assumed it would be the same day based on the wording of the note and replied “As far as I know effective immediately, without delay”. After further questions from journalists he confirmed that the regulations included the border crossings towards West Berlin, which he had not mentioned until then.

Soon afterwards, a West German television channel, ARD, broadcast incomplete information from Schabowski’s press conference. A moderator stated: “This ninth of November is a historic day.” East Germany “has announced that, starting immediately, its borders are open to everyone.”

Twitter inventor Jack Dorsey has created the ‘Square’, a credit card swipe module that plugs into the headphone jack of an iPhone. Here’s what it does:

The innovation is in a small, plastic card reader that fits in to the headphone jack of an iPhone (or iPod Touch) and transfers the credit card’s swipe data to the app. After the employee enters the amount to charge, the customer confirms by scrawling their signature with their finger and then either one enters the customer’s email address to send the receipt to. The payment is processed by Square for a small percentage plus a fixed fee; the funds are transferred directly to the store’s bank account, cutting both time and complexity on the processing side. The customer’s receipt includes a map showing the location of the transaction which is handy for those who record, sort and file such things.

An interesting story on how the move to create a city-owned fiber optic network for all homes in a Minnesota town sparked a private company to beat them to it. Of course, to the benefit of all the customers!

There seems to be reflections here of what would happen if a government healthcare option were to be introduced… Private companies would beat them to it, of course to the benefit of all the customers!

“Twitter is important because it’s a new protocol. Fundamentally it’s a messaging protocol where you don’t specify the recipients. It’s really more of a discovery than an invention; that square was always there in the periodic table of protocols, but no one had quite hit it squarely.
Successful new protocols are rare. There are only a handful of commonly used ones: TCP/IP (the Internet), SMTP (email), HTTP (the web), and so on. So any new protocol is a big deal. Each one of those protocols has spawned many successful companies. Twitter will too. We want to fund those companies. And the people at Twitter also want to encourage people to build stuff on top of it. So together we came up with a plan: anyone YC funds to do a startup based on Twitter will get priority access to the Twitter stream, and to people at Twitter.”

Maya Lin’s original competition submission for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Architectural drawings and a one page written summary. It was chosen from 1,421 entries submitted. (via 37signals)

Maya’s always been a minimalist, but what’s so striking about this is how minimal it really is - here, you only see the bare minimum of what you absolutely have to see to understand the concept, and nothing more. I find this laudable. As a side note, the choice of colors is fantastic.
